Hi Family,

This is your cousin Timeca and I am writing to ask for your help laying Mommy Dor to rest and to mark the passing of a generation (an era) of our family: Essie “Ninie” Mae Miles, Betty “Aunt Betty” Jean Hardy, and now, on Monday, February 26, 2018, Dorothy “Mommy Dor” Mae Hastings.

These 3 women formed the foundation of our family in Portland, Oregon. They came to the Northwest from the south (Louisiana and Mississippi), lead by Essie Mae.

They are our ancestors: they are our history, our present, and our future. Some of the decisions they made and actions they took put our family on a remarkable journey. Clearly, this journey has not been devoid of mistakes, things unsaid and some tragedy. But, to their credit, they also planted the seed for a lot of joy, strength, and resilience which we seem to have in abundance, thankfully.

Now it’s time for us to pick up and carry on from where they left off and make an even better future for ourselves and our families.

I hope to see many of you at the service, and I will keep you posted here as the details are arranged. And if you can’t make it, that’s okay too. Do not feel bad.

I am hopeful that this becomes an opportunity for many of us to reconnect, heal and share some much-needed love, stories, and support with each other.

Out of Mommy Dor’s 6 children, there are only 3 present to take on the responsibility of laying their mother to rest.

Now, as many of you all know, Mommy Dor did not have arrangements made. This has put much of the pressure for arranging and paying for the funeral on Rose and Beverly.

For many of us, funds are tight, but if we as a family can come together, we can ease the emotional and financial burden that has fallen on them.

Rose, James, and Beverly have met with a number of funeral homes over the past few days. The funeral will cost approximately $5,000. This will go towards the preparation of Mommy Dor's body, clothing, casket,  service (flowers, musician, officiant, etc), paperwork, cremation, and urn.

So, I am reaching out to all of her grandchildren, grown great-grands, nieces and nephews as well as grown great nieces and nephews to please contribute what you can. Let's make this ending a new beginning... a new beginning of mending broken bonds, of love, of healing, of taking care of business so that none of us is ever in this position again.

If we can all aim for $200 that would be beautiful, but whatever you can contribute is so very, very appreciated!

Thank you and love you.

I'll be forwarding all of the funeral service details soon!

In the meantime, please feel free to share messages of love and support as well as your memories of Mommy Dor, her sister Betty, and mother Ninie, below.
