Hurricane Dorian Washed Our Home Away

Donation protected
My name is Leah Bryce from Toronto, Canada, and I am organizing this campaign for my parents, Enid and James Bryce. They live in Freeport, Bahamas and have done so for most of their lives. Between September 1 and 3, 2019, their lives were forever changed when Hurricane Dorian with over 25 foot storm surge swept through Freeport, Bahamas, destroying their dream retirement home. Not even the appliances or toilets were left behind. But more importantly than that, the repository of our memories, such as photo albums and other personal effects, were swept out to sea and lost forever. I was incredibly grateful to hear that they were alive and physically well through all of this especially since hundreds of people perished. There’s still many missing who will never be accounted for.

My dad had designed the house himself 25 years ago: 3,000 square feet overlooking the canal and facing the evening sunset. There were two adjacent lots specifically for his fruit and vegetable garden, which became his focal point upon retirement 22 years ago. The house had been designed to withstand the strongest hurricanes with a very strong foundation and built high above the ground to protect it from flooding and storm surges.  They had been through a few hurricanes in that house, in the past, luckily with little to no damage.  Unfortunately this time, they were not so fortunate as the storm surge was catastrophic, and there was no insurance coverage, given that all the homes in this large area were in a potential flood zone.

Their financial savings had been exhausted in educating my brother and I through high school and university, the investment in their dream retirement home, followed more recently by a major operation incurred by my mom at Cleveland Clinic costing US$46,000.  Although they receive a small pension that covers basic monthly expenses, they don't have the financial resources to rebuild.
Please rest assured that all monies donated will be withdrawn by myself and  placed directly in their joint account (in the name of James and Enid Bryce) and will be spent entirely on either rebuilding and refurnishing their existing home or helping start a new life in a new home.

Any donation would be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate, please share our page so it can reach as many as possible.

Thank you for your time.
