Dear Family and Friends of Omar,
Our dear Omar is going through a major trauma. On September 28th, Omar Zubaedi was admitted to the Emergency Room with a Ruptured Appendix in Boulder, CO. After assessment, he was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital, a trauma center in Lafayette, CO where he was treated for his ruptured appendix. He had a subsequent infection that spanned from his lower right abdomen to his outer right thigh. The infection, called necrotizing fasciitis, is a type of flesh eating bacteria that came from his ruptured appendix. After multiple surgeries to remove the infected tissue, Omar is left with a large area of muscle and skin to heal. Every 2-4 days, he goes under general anesthesia to redress the wound area with a wound VAC, a mesh sponge that sucks onto the area and creates a micro-climate that supports new tissue growth and keeps the infection out. Thus far, he has had 7 surgeries and although he is now out of the ICU and on the medical surgical ward, this is just the beginning. The next phase for Omar will include wound dressing changes under anesthesia every 2-4 days as well as extensive reconstructive surgery with a plastic surgeon. Part of a muscle from his thigh will replace the muscle tissue lost in his lower abdomen, and he will need multiple skin grafts. He will be in the hospital for up to 2 months depending on how the next phase goes, followed by anywhere from 6-12 months convalescing at home.
Omar has experienced a severe trauma and is dealing with a lot of pain every day. Basic things like eating, pooping and standing are challenging at this point. Nonetheless, he is dealing with everything with his characteristic grace and good will. He looked death right in the face and has chosen life and this path to recovery. He has surpassed every benchmark given to him by the surgeons, doctors and nursing staff tending him, and the whole process is steadily moving forward. Omar’s life force and vitality are shining through and he will recover.
Throughout this process, Omar has great support. His wife Megan spends days and most nights at Omar’s side. Peggy, his mother in law, is tag teaming with Megan. His parents, Joan and Farouk, flew in from San Diego and have been there every day supporting Omar. Sunflower, his daughter, flew in from New York to be with her Dad. Gopal, his son, flew back from Vietnam to be at his side. Countless close friends and loved ones have been in to visit Omar daily and the long distance support from friends and family has been astounding. Omar has certainly gotten lots of healing inspiration from the waves of love coming his way in a steady stream. We are all very grateful for the continued support.
The next few months are going to be challenging. Both Megan and Omar are self employed and understandably neither of them will be working for the foreseeable future. The medical bills will be mighty with all he has been through and all that he faces. They are working with a financial advisor to manage things the best they can. On top of the medical bills and his lengthy hospital stay, adjustments will be needed to their house to accommodate his needs when he returns home. His continuing care and treatment will include medical equipment, physical therapy, prescriptions, acupuncture, lymphatic drainage treatments, herbs and high quality food. He needs to eat a diet high in protein to help his body reconstruct tissue. All of this costs money, and we are asking you to help as you can. A little or a lot. Everything helps. At this point we are not sure what the amount will be exactly, but based on what we do know so far, it will be staggering. The initial estimate for his care is $1.3 million. He may not need that much and he may need more. If they reach their goal and do not need it all, refunds or donations to other charities can be made. If it turns out he needs more, we will adjust the goal amount. Anything you can give will be appreciated, and mean so much to Omar and Megan. They are so lucky to have such wonderful family and friends to call on in this time of need.
