As you likely know our mom suffered a traumatic brain injury on September 2nd, 2018. Following this she's had a long, uncertain road to recovery. The past several months have beem filled with many ups and downs. Mom started to show significant regression in the past month and a half which led to her needing brain surgery yesterday. This surgery was to place her bone back that was removed the day of her injury to relieve pressure. This would've been performed eventually anyhow but was done at this time in hopes of improving her recent regression.
After a seamless brain operation mom has her bone back and is currently recovering from her surgery at UVA. In a sense this feels as if we are starting all over in her recovery. But, we remain faithful in being by her side, advocating for her everyday and praying relentlessly for her recovery.
We are unsure of what her next step in rehabilitation is but it still remains a priority for her to have focused therapy with the sole intent of her regaining function. We've been reassured more times than not she still has potential.
With all this said, mom will be at UVA for awhile longer, we are unsure of a discharge date at this time. As before, we are committed to being as involved and present in her care as much as possible despite her being almost 2 hours away. This requires long drives to Charlottesville & long days, some nights spent at the hospital. This gets very costly quickly but we find it's vital in her recovery, her care team agrees as she's unable to express her needs and truly benefits from the stimulation of her family. Also, after discharge we are unsure what our plan will be for the next step of recovery. It is unclear if she'll return home or have the opportunity to go to acute rehab potentially in Charlottesville again. We are prayerfully working thru this decision.
If you would like to donate any funds to help further support the needs of mom's recovery it is greatly appreciated. These funds would be applied to gas money, food and any needs she may have that is not covered by her insurance. If you know how medical insurance works, you can imagine this can be a challenge.
