HISTORICAL CEMETERY #13 DAMAGED IN BURRILLVILLE. On January 1st a drunk driver in an SUV heading south on Church Street in Pascoag, ran off the road at a high rate of speed and flew up over a stone wall, plowing through the cemetery, breaking four gravestones, flinging pieces of them a considerable distance, digging deep ruts in the graveyard, flipping over and coming to rest in a neighbor’s driveway upside down. The driver fled the scene. He is being charged and the court will seek damages. A section of the stone wall was demolished. In the meantime, the Burrillville Historical & Preservation Society felt compelled to repair damages to the cemetery as we are told the court case will drag on for years. Over the winter we repaired the small slate footstones that sustained severe damage, as well as a marble footstone that was smashed in the center leaving a missing piece. These were repaired offsite. The large stone of Huldah Keeggan was broken in 3 pieces and had to be put back together using a tripod. Much damage was sustained by the impact of the vehicle shredding pieces of the stone into unusable shards. A mason has repaired most of the wall. There's still a lot of glass in the cemetery and it needs to be re-landscaped by adding loam. This job has used a lot of our resources. Please donate to the Burrillville Historical & Preservation Society so that we can continue our restoration and conservation work in Burrillville's historical cemeteries. Betty and Carlo Mencucci.
