Dear Friends, Family, and Kind Strangers,

My name is Courtney Nolen, and I never imagined I'd be writing these words, but life has taken an unexpected turn. Just six weeks after bringing her beautiful healthy baby boy into this world, my sister Brooke Young was diagnosed with postpartum cardiomyopathy, a rare but severe condition affecting her heart.

At just 33 years old, she never thought she would be facing a life-threatening illness right after the joy of becoming a mother for the third time. Her heart is currently functioning at only 20%, and the risk of her heart stopping at any moment has left her requiring constant care. The simplest activity brings many challenges for Brooke including severe shortness of breath, chest pains, and pure exhaustion. She requires around the clock assistance from family to help take care of her 3 young boys, cooking, cleaning, and other daily tasks. To protect her life, she was required to wear a specialized life vest, which monitored her heart in case it needed shocked back into rhythm if it stopped. This vest alone costs $5,000 per month to rent.

Adding to the emotional and physical strain, her doctor has informed her last week that she will need to be off work for 6-12 more months after her maternity leave ends, possibly longer if her heart doesn’t make a full recovery. Her maternity leave was unpaid, and this diagnosis has created a significant financial hardship that she never anticipated. They are seeking other avenues of assistance however they are hitting many roadblocks.

Her and her husband Shawn Young are doing everything they can to adjust, but the mounting medical expenses, combined with the cost of the life vest, and the loss of income during her extended leave, are overwhelming. As much as it pains her to ask for help, she has allowed us to reach out to our community to support her and her family during this incredibly difficult time.

The funds raised will go directly towards:

• Covering the cost of the life vest

• Medical bills not covered by insurance that she will be inquiring for months/year/years

• Living expenses during her extended time off work
