Increase LGBT Youths Access to Mental Health

Donation protected
Currently, LGBTIQA+ youths have limited access to mental health support services for many reasons. Common reasons include unfriendly psychiatrists or psychologists, lack of safety, confidentiality, and sensitivity, or just because mental health services are too expensive to afford. We believe that this must change! We were founded by a close-knit team dedicated to helping this particular population of young people. We provide tailored individual and family counseling sessions and therapies to help a young person as well as their family to embrace diversity – safely, confidentially, and with the utmost sensitivity. As a young organization, we currently have limited financial and in-kind resources that are affecting us to reach more people. Your donation will help us to change that!

We are a young DRG registered Australian charity based in Perth, Western Australia. We support the holistic mental health wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ young people aged 12-25 to help them cope with their everyday struggles and prevent self-harm.

National and international studies have shown that LGBTIQA+ people are twice likely to have symptoms of mental health disorders and transgender people aged 25 and under are nearly 10 times more likely to be diagnosed with depression in their lifetime.

Children and young people under 16 are more vulnerable. Studies have shown that schools are vulnerable to bullying and discrimination. Data shows that as much as 80% of homophobic and transphobic bullying occurs at school and 75% of LGBTIQA+ youths experience bullying or discrimination. An alarming 81% of LGBTIQA+ students believe that their schools do not support them and that their teachers are not doing enough to stop LGBTIQA+ bullying.

As a result, schools have been stepping up efforts to make their premises safer for every child. These efforts include training and awareness to staff members and students on various topics of sexual and gender diversity, implementing strict anti-bullying policies, and renovating infrastructures to make it all gender friendly.

But more needs to be done due to the severity of the problem.

The first thing? Increasing access of LGBTIQA+ youths to mental health support services.

We also provide a safe space for LGBTIQA+ youths to identify, explore and develop skills, abilities, and knowledge so that they are able to navigate through the struggles they may be facing in their lives and relationships. We continually work to make our premises a place where queer youth can discover and embrace what is important to them, a place to connect with other young people who are facing similar (and different) hardships, and a space where they can celebrate the person they are becoming.

However, we have our fair share of constraints that we want to overcome.

As a young organization, we currently have limited financial and in-kind resources that are affecting us to reach more people. As a result, we are currently operating only two days a week and supporting a limited number of LGBTIQA+ youths who need mental health support.

Hence, we are seeking your generous donations that would help us to

- Expand our working hours and telehealth service so that we can provide support to more LGBTIQA+ youths,

- Provide more fully subsidized therapy sessions to those in need,

- Start awareness campaigns at schools and communities to help individuals become more supportive and attentive to the special needs of LGBTIQA+ children and reduce any form of bullying.
