Hello Dear Family and Friends,
I have been blessed to have had my music take me to many parts of our world. I have been given so much through these experiences, and feel in my heart it's time to give back, in this case to a particular cause and community...
I will be joining a group of people from the Seattle area who will be going on a mission trip to South Africa during the first two weeks of September, 2014. The trip is sponsored by Prevention Time, a 501(c)3 organization which sponsors AIDS prevention, orphan care, and youth development in South Africa.
UNAIDS reports that South Africa has the highest rate of HIV infection in the world, with 5.7 million people infected, and 2.5 million orphans. We want to bring the message of hope to these people. It is our desire to seal off the virus from the upcoming generation. We want them to catch the vision (staying alive and living life to the fullest) and not the virus. We will be working in Tugela Ferry, in the rural Zulu province of KwaZulu-Natal, about 120 miles north of Durban. This village has a high incidence of HIV/AIDS and TB, high unemployment, and a large number of children who are orphans.
Prevention Time supports a faith based HIV/AIDS education/prevention program taught in local schools called Reach4Life©. The Reach4Life book contains a series of lessons presented in a way that is appealing to young people. The emphasis is on making wise life choices, especially with regard to sexual behavior. We will be working with this program in some schools. We’ll also do some community outreach, including a kids’ club, hospital and hospice visits, prison ministry, hut visits, and other outreaches. We’ll take family photos, which are rare and cherished by these people. Sometimes these may be the only photos of loved ones they will have in an area where many people are dying. My primary responisibilty is to play music and/or lead worship in the communities we visit, as well as further develop the program with their peer educators.
