Dom's Big Move to Grad School

Donation protected
Greetings and salutations. My name is Dominique Scott, and I am a recent graduate of the University of Mississippi. This fall I will be embarking on one of the most exciting and terrifying adventures of my life: graduate school! I was accepted into the PhD of Sociology program, the sixth ranked Sociology program of public universities in the country, at the University of Texas at Austin! This six year long research intensive PhD program will bring me closer to my dream of becoming a Sociology professor.

A Little About Me:

I graduated cum laude from the University of Mississippi with a bachelor of arts degree in Sociology and a minor in African American Studies. During my time at the University, I was highly active in a number of number of student organizations and activities, including the rechartering of the UM NAACP chapter, which later went on to win the 2016 NAACP Chairman's Award at the NAACP Image Awards; the founding of Students Against Social Injustice, USAS Local 121; serving as President of E.S.T.E.E.M.; serving on the Center for Inclusion and Cross Cultural Engagement Inclusion Team as a Peer Educator; becoming a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; and being appointed as a Ronald E. McNair Scholar. In my capacity as a student organizer, I worked alongside other students for the removal of the Mississippi state flag at UM and the contextualization of Confederate iconography and Civil War memorabilia. We also advocated for the implementation of a multicultural studies supplement to the current undergraduate core curriculum.

During the summer of 2016, I began my research into Black service workers in the South. The research focuses on the performance and emotional labor of Black food service workers and how they navigate and survive the tenuous and fickle world of tipping. At UT, I intend to continue and expand this work.

Over the course of this summer, I have been working as a Community Desk Assistant to save up for the move. Unfortunately, as my move quickly approaches, my savings and income are not enough to cover all of my relocating and moving costs--which is why I am now humbly requesting help. I will be settling in Austin on August 15; classes begin August 30. I need help with funds to move my belongings and to secure housing in Austin. Any amount that you would consider donating would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your support!
