For those of you who may not know, Diane has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). You may have watched her labored strides and thought, "Why does she walk like that?" You may have had conversations with her and wondered, "Why does she have trouble keeping her train of thought?"
Diane was first diagnosed with MS in 1987 when she awoke to blindness in one eye. After a series of neurological scans and many tests, doctors gave her the diagnosis that would change her life forever. MS is a chronic disease that "involves an immune-mediated process in which an abnormal response of the body’s immune system is directed against the central nervous system" (www.nationalmssociety.org). Diane was fortunate to live many years in "remission" with minimal MS symptom flare ups. Unfortunately, as time has progressed, so has the severity of the disease. At this point, she has difficulty walking and uses a leg brace (and occasionally uses a walker or "trekking poles") for maintaining balance and stability in her stride. She cannot stand for extended periods of time without experiencing immense pain and fatigue. She also experiences frequent "brain fogs," and the culmination of these present symptoms have impaired her ability to lead what many of us consider a normal life.
After carefully and tirelessly researching treatment options, Diane discovered a procedure typically performed on CCSVI patients that is being used as an option to help MS sufferers like herself. This procedure has already helped thousands of MS patients see drastic improvements in mobility and reductions in the severity of other debilitating symptoms they experience due to the progression of this disease. While this treatment is not a cure for MS, it has helped many of those who suffer to regain some level of normalcy in their lives. In fact, the National MS Society currently has allocated funds for further researching this procedure as a viable treatment for MS patients in the hopes that it may eventually become fully endorsed by the society.
With three young grandsons (3 years, 1 year and 2 months old), Diane has so many memories still to make as a grandmother and with your help, she could have a chance to not just live her life with improved mobility and cognition, but actually have the physical strength to keep up with "her little buddies" as they continue to grow.
