Hi there,
Both Paula and I (Avril) were signed up to complete the Dublin marathon on the 26th of October this year. Due to the challenging times we are in, the Dublin marathon was cancelled. Paula and I took the positive attitude to continue training as if the marathon were to still happen and complete it locally while raising funds for an exceptional service, The Oncology Unit in Wexford. As one person in the community said ‘’let’s run the parish’’ and the plan is to do this on the 25th of Oct…hail, rain or snow…
I am personally familiar with the Oncology unit in Wexford. I have been a regular visitor for over three years now getting ongoing treatment…as they say I am part of the furniture at this stage. The staff in the Oncology unit are not only front line heroes that go to work every day and risk their own health to help others but also angels that help, to the best of their ability, make patient visits as easy and as stress free as possible. . I genuinely and honestly could not sing their praises enough and I’d like to show my appreciation in some small way for the tough work that they do every day to give patients a better life.
I ask you to help them by joining in this fundraiser and showing your support. We all know someone unfortunately getting treatment and by supporting this fundraiser you are helping hugely, more than you know. We understand that you have people asking for donations for other fundraisers and its difficult to support them all, however I can truly say that is will be money that will mean a lot to a huge amount of people going through the double doors in the Oncology unit. Sacrifice the morning takeaway coffee for 2 days, the Saturday night takeaway, the bottle of wine and donate the money instead. You will feel a great satisfaction for helping others. Every single penny raised will be donated to the Oncology unit as we will have no overheads such as t-shirts, medals etc.
All money raised will be donated to the Oncology Unit so they can continue the good fight with patients and friends not just now but for years to come.
The plan on the 25th of October is to start the marathon early in the morning 9ish (TBC). We have several wonderful people that will run the marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km with us and we are calling out for more volunteers to support and motivate us on the run. It’s up to you how you would like to participate, run, walk, or cycle whatever distance you choose or simply just donate.
Paula and I will commence the run (plus several wonderful people) at Templeludigan Community Hall, Eircode Y21 TW73. We are trying out several routes at present, however we have a favourite in mind which we will test out over the next few days. If we are happy with the route, we will post it on this page early next week. If people would like to complete their own route virtually and at another date that is up to you. There is several weeks to get those runners out, even for 20mins 3 times a week and have the 26th of Oct as a goal in mind. Put down the phone, the iPad, switch off the TV and get off the couch and get some fresh air into those lungs. The satisfaction afterwards out weights the toughness. Enjoy those sunny mornings and evenings with a bit of fresh air.
There is approx. 13 weeks until the 25th of October so there is enough of time to train. Rope in a few buddies, setup a WhatsApp group to get training with you as you are more than likely to be more successful when someone else is motivating you. This should go both ways!!
We will post a few updates in the coming weeks for example the marathon route, suggested routes for people completing other distances, a countdown and anything else relevant.
