Learning to Build a Movement

Donation protected
This year I received several scholarships that allowed me to transfer to American University and be on track to complete my undergraduate degree. As a DREAM Act eligible student, this was an opportunity for which I had to fight hard. I'm sad to say that my status as an applicant for residency still limits my access to opportunities such as studying abroad through American University.

While many institutions view study abroad as an extracurricular activity during the undergraduate experience, American University builds degrees with an expectation to study abroad. So that students like me are able to access the same quality of education, I am working with the administration to create a domestic exchange program.

One such opportunity, currently offered to American University students, is a US Civil Rights trip run March 10-16,2012 by Professor Julian Bond. Opportunities like this would allow students like me to experience history first hand by meeting boundary-breaking activists and visit places where the Civil Rights movement was born, fought, and won.

Although I am eager to go on this trip, I do not have the financial resources to pay for this. As a DREAM Act eligible student, I am not allowed to work in the US. Nor, am I allowed to study abroad like many of my peers. That is why I need your help. Here's a breakdown of what I need to raise:

"¢ Airline ticket from DC to Atlanta, GA ($150) (where the trip begins)
"¢ Airline ticket from Memphis, TN to DC ($200) (where the trip ends)
"¢ Meals ($200)
"¢ Cost of Trip ($2,445)

Total= $2,995

As someone who is interested in both education and racial justice, this trip would truly be life changing and would provide me with knowledge that cannot be found in textbooks. This trip would also jumpstart my undergraduate research on the Freedom Summer and would be a catalyst for my career in social justice activism.

You can find additional information about the trip below. I plan to share my photos and experiences with you if I'm able to participate.

Thank you for your continuing support,
