It's taken 9 years to get to Select Classic 1 level of GA soccer (travel soccer). We started as a recreational team with a terrible coach (me) that lost all of its games except for a tie in our first season. Now we are ranked in the top 20 teams in GA.
Nov 16-18th - there is a huge college ID soccer tournament in Raleigh NC. 300+ College coaches come to watch 400 teams play. It's the one of the largest gathering of college soccer coaches in the country to scout talent. When local college coaches saw our team play last season (as HS sophomores and juniors) we got a lot of attention and interest. Our goal this year and next is to play at the Raleigh Showcase tournament and get a lot more exposure and hopefully scholarships for the guys. The majority of our players would be the first in their families to go to college. It has not been an option for them or their families and I see soccer as an avenue to attend college and create new possibility for my players' futures.
Nearly all of my players have jobs and many pay for their own fees and uniforms with little or no parental support. Many show up to practice after a long hot day of construction or landscaping and hand me $20-$50 on our "soccer lay-a-way payment plan". Despite the fact that I am probably the cheapest travel coach in GA (my team pays less than half the fees of other Select teams ) our players still struggle to afford to play competitive soccer.
We intend to raise $5,000 to pay for the tournament fees, hotel rooms, food and vans for the 3 day tournament. We are planning to have car washes to help raise any additional money needed. We are seeking individual and corporate sponsors to help make college a reality for 18 young men.
It has been my pleasure and honor to watch these boys grow up to be responsible and hard working young men. Unlike other coaches who get paid and have several teams, this is my only team and I am committed to the long term success of my guys. I hope that you can support them in any way or amount that is comfortable for you. We can't do this without your help.
