I am an 18-year-old filmmaker/spear-fisherman from Portugal. I started spearfishing at the age of 7 with my dad. Immediately I became hooked and began training as much as I could, slowly evolving to become the spear-fisherman that I am today. Film-making is something which I started at around the age of 13. I began filming a professional Brazilian free-surfer. From there things evolved, I created my own company called Gibson Productions and started producing videos for hostels, WSL surfers, weddings, and surf schools.
Throughout the years of spearfishing, I have always wanted to get better. For this reason, I took a free-diving course which certifies me to go down to 20 meters of depth (no tanks). I also joined the Associação Portuguesa de Pesca Submarina e Apneia (APPSA) and the International Underwater Spearfishing Association (IUSA). The mission of both of these associations is to promote ethical, safe and sportsmanlike spearfishing practices, to encourage and support a sense of environmental responsibility among divers, and to participate in educational and scientific programs.
All the spearfishing I do involves a snorkel and mask (no tanks). Thanks to my training I can go down to 30 meters of depth and hold my breath for 4 minutes. I do this because when down at 20/30 meters you feel a tranquility which you don’t get anywhere else.
Spearfishing in Portugal is amazing, but at the back of my mind, I have always been thinking of the big fish. The tunas, the wahoos, and the mahi-mahis. This summer now that I am finishing school I finally have the opportunity to fulfil my goal and catch my dream fish. From the 2nd of June to the 8th I will be flying down to Costa Rica for a spearfishing/fishing trip. I will be joining a world class guide whom I’ve been speaking to throughout the last few months. From the town of Jaco, we will be taking a boat into the deep blue Pacific where they're ledges that come up from 5000 meters to 40 meters and where some of the worlds biggest predators hang out. My guides name is Sean Hascup. He has an incredible Instagram page called blood_sweat_and_tears
which you can go check out to see all the fish he catches in Costa Rica. You can also go check out my Instagram page: wat.fishing
which shows some of the fish I have caught
During my trip to Costa Rica, I am planning on spearfishing, fishing and filming my travels. I will be making a short video which I will share with all of you once it is complete. I hope to show, through my film, the sustainability of spearfishing as well as the beauty that Costa Rica has to offer. I will also send the video off to GoPro to see if they post it up on their website. If you want to check out some of the videos which I have made you can click this link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzCwCyQzFEZVqiTTq5VpUeQ/videos?view_as=subscriber
. You can also go to my Instagram page: gibson__productions
for other work which I have done.
Spearfishing is one of the most sustainable methods of fishing as one can choose what species they want to catch and the size of the fish. All fish caught on the trip will be eaten, and any surplus fish will be donated to the local people.
My promise to you is to keep you with daily updates of the conditions, fish caught, etc. I will also be sending you the finalised video as aforementioned.
The funds which I hopefully receive will be used for local travels, insurances, food, the hostel which I will be staying at, the boat rental, and the guide. Your aid and support are greatly appreciated! Thank you very much in advance!! Help me to take you on this adventure with me and show you the beauty of spearfishing/free-diving and the world.Videos
