Disaster Relief Santiago Tuxtla

Queridos Amigos,

Southern Mexico experienced torrential rain and flash flooding in October, 2017 . Santiago Tuxtla, a bastion of rich folkloric tradition, including the celebrated music of Son Jarocho, has suffered one of the most damaging floods in its history. The Tepango River, which courses through the colonial-era town jumped its banks and damaged thousands of homes and businesses, with dozens of homes completely destroyed. An official state of emergency was declared: https://liberal.com.mx/santiago-tuxtla-vive-la-peor-inundacion/

The town suffered severe infrastructural damages:

Needless to say, many communities in the greater Los Tuxtla region have been affected, sustaining significant property damage and total loss of personal belongings.

There have been examples of impressive grassroots organizing, such as the  brigadas de ayuda, or social assistance brigades.

Nevertheless the people of Santiago Tuxtla need our help to continue their work. They have enriched us with their folklore, and as caring neighbors we lend our support.

This crowd funding campaign will donate directly to the families in need, and the funds will channeled through the indomitable Joel Cruz Castellanos, who is one of the many engaged community members helping to organize support.

They are buying and distributing household goods, medicine, cleaning supplies and tools, clothing, footwear, and basic food and cookware.

Much of the assistance is already organized by civil society, and your donation will help fund the work they are already doing.

I haven't been able to find much coverage of this natural disaster outside of regional news, yet through social media the aftermath is being well documented by intrepid citizens.

Thanks to Jatdrone photography and Emmanuel Chagala for the images, Joel Cruz Castellanos, and  to everyone for sharing the campaign and especially those who donated.
