Disabled homeless women - help until I get housing

Donation protected
Before the accident, I had a full-time career with a well-paying job, but I became homeless due to an RV accident. I have never been an addict, or alcoholic nor have I ever been severely mentally disabled. I was required to (and did) pass Federal background checks for my work contracts.

Currently, I'm sleeping in a partially converted shed (without plumbing) in a lower mountain area of North Carolina, as shown in the picture above. I’ve been allowed to stay here until the end of February and I’ll have to pay the owner back for the electricity I used when here. I have to leave because she wants to rent it to someone who can afford to pay her a monthly rent and I currently do not have an income. I’m applying for SSDI with my doctor’s support. Hopefully, I’ll know by March or April.

My social case manager is looking for a place I can stay such as a free campground or a safe parking program in another county. Like 46 other states, North Carolina doesn’t have a homeless shelter or transitional housing program specifically for physically disabled homeless people. The few that accept the physically disabled, have no waitlist specifically for the physically disabled. I'm on the waitlist for Housing for 6 counties, 2 cities, and the state. County waitlist is a 12-15 month wait, cities is 1 to 2 years and the state waiting list is 3 to 5 years. I’m number 55 for one county & was told I should hear from them by the end of summer to start the paperwork to get a voucher for housing.

North Carolina does not have cash assistance for individuals without children. I am receiving Food Stamps and finally Medicaid so I am in physical therapy for the body damage.

I have tried to get a job with the disabilities I have. I have sent over 500 professional resumes, filled out over 100 applications, and sent my resume to more than 100 recruiting and staffing agencies (cold-emailing instead of calling.) My physical disabilities prevent me from doing most jobs.

I am REALLY hoping my social case manager can find something soon. I am genuinely losing hope.

How I would use the money:

  • Use the money for transportation to/from doctor appointments
  • Pay for campground spots until I get SSDI & housing
  • Life necessities such as antiseptic mouthwash, toilet paper, dish/body soap, and prescription co-pays (State Medicaid doesn’t pay 100%)

Currently, I'm collecting the paperwork I need and looking for help to file bankruptcy so that when I can start looking for an apartment, my credit shows bankruptcy instead of $300, 000 in debt.

How I became homeless

I was driving on a country highway and pulled over to a small area to let the cars behind me pass. I put the RV in park and got up to grab a water bottle when I realized the bus started rolling. I turned around and tried to run to the driver's seat, but I only managed to take one step forward when the RV started rolling downhill, hit a tree, and I went through the windshield. To make a long story short, the brakes were not installed correctly, and they gave out because I had parked on a hill, which provided just enough gravity for the RV to roll. The insurance company used a loophole not to pay out because it was a skoolie, I was not hit by a car, and I did not hit a car. I spoke to attorneys about it but after they read the policy, they said I would lose in court. I also couldn't sue the original home mechanic seller because it was sold "As Is."

I spent 9 months in California literally begging for help from homeless agencies and shelters. I called and emailed several local politicians and Governor Newsome, in an attempt to help myself. I spent months calling and visiting doctors' offices to get the physical help I needed and underwent multiple MRIs and X-rays showing the extent of the damage. I applied for SSDI, but Neighborhood Healthcare didn't fill out the requested reports Social Security sent. My SSDI was denied, and I was left with no cash benefits. The San Diego County Department of Health and Human Services terminated them immediately. After this happened, I went to North Carolina.
