On November 20, 2017 Diana was traveling to school and was involved in a motor vehicle accident. As I write this 4 days later, she is currently in and out of alertness and can only communicate with a “thumbs up” for yes. She can only open one eye and is needed to be fed with a feeding tube. She is making progress daily but will need extensive physical and speech rehabilitation. She will be referred to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake when it is time for her to begin this rehab journey. Just over 11 years ago, Diana’s mom, Janene was involved in a similar accident. She was also sent to Salt Lake City for care, only she was air lifted. Insurance did not cover the $14,000 flight and she stayed in the Salt Lake area for many weeks prior to her return home to Pocatello. One maxed out Credit Card turned into two, etc. Travel expenses grew. The bondage of that debt was overwhelming and many years later we are still feeling the effects financially of that day.
Our church teaches that when we are in need, we first look to our own resources and abilities to be self-reliant. When necessary we look to our family, extended family, support of friends, community resources, and then to the church for support, in that order. And that is what we are doing differently this time.
We have been so blessed in the last few days with an outpouring of love, generosity, and service as we are dealing with this experience. If you would like to help with Diana’s financial support as she is on this journey of recovery, we would greatly appreciate it. Thanks to all who have been there for us in this time of need.
