Diamond NN 59 Sailboat Restoration Project

The goal of this project is to raise the necessary funds, estimated to be about $60,750 to complete the sailboat’s restoration/total rebuild, and be issued a Certificate of Inspection, which enables the Sailboat to serve the community and earn a living like its cousin, the Historic PLOVER Passenger Ferry.
The Restoration Project will need this estimated amount to get the sailboat back in the water this year. To date, DHM has spent $49,250 in labor and materials for the NN 59 sailboat project, raised $52,708.13 in cash donations, and $58,000 in-kind donations including; $28,000 in donated labor, and $30,000 in donated work space and utilities over the past 6-years.
The NN 59 sailboat once earned a living catching Red Salmon (sockeye) in Bristol Bay, Alaska operating out of the Damond NN Salmon cannery between 1906 & 1951, and now nearly 71 years out of th water the sailboat will have an career. The diminutive little sailor will be a platform for taking its paid audience out of Semiahmoo on interpretive sails, experiencing what it may have been like sailing/fishing on one of these iconic salmon boats over a 100 years ago. The Certification of Inspection designation will provide the NN59 sailboat the ability to charge passage, thus affording the sailboat the ability to earn a living to pay ongoing expenses such as insurance, moorage, maintenance, and crew. All of the elements of good stewardship this iconic relic from our maritime past deserves.
The sailboats earnings will also subsidize the cost of getting young people out on the water, revealing to them the wonders of boating on the Salish Sea, and teaching them traditional sailing techniques and an appreciation of keeping our waterways clean and healthy. Unlike its cousin, the Historic PLOVER Ferry, which has a committed weekend schedule, the NN 59 sailboat will be unencumbered and will be at the beck and call of the community it will serve, pulling its weight as the ambassador.
