Ty is a 6 year old boy in Hedgesville, West Virginia, with Type 1 Diabetes. Ty requires 24 hour monitoring to maintain safe blood sugar levels. Ty is too young to monitor his own levels. He lives with his parents and his two siblings in a modest hard working family.  With school and other activities, it is difficult for his family to monitor his levels 24-7.

Ty and his family have qualified to receive a trained canine from Diabetic Alert Dogs of America. This will be a fully trained and certified dog that will complete 6-8 months of training, using "the same methods that the FBI and ATF use to train their scent detection working dogs." These dogs detect changes  in blood sugar levels by scent. The Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD) will accompany Ty on his daily journeys to school and after school activities, as well as monitoring his blood sugar at night, much like any trained Service Dog would aid their owner.

According to Diabetic Alert Dogs of America, "our Diabetic Alert Dogs are trained to alert diabetic handlers in advance of low or high blood sugar events before they become dangerous. This allows the handler to take proper steps to return blood sugar levels to a normal healthy range." These dogs are trained to monitor blood sugar levels both day and night, with nighttime alerts being particularly important. The dog will have a lifetime training and health guarantee, with vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and a microchip.

Due to the cost of the training and equipment, the Hedgesville Lions Club has decided to raise the funds for Ty's dog. The cost for a trained dog is $15,000, and your help to fund this project either by donation is greatly appreciated!

The Hedgesville Lions Club, located in Hedgesville, WV, is an active member of Lions Club International. Our mission is to support the community with hearing and visual aids. Recently, we have expanded our mission to supporting the diabetes crisis across the nation and our first project is the purchase of a Diabetic Alert Dog for a member of our community at a cost of $15,000. Our normal annual budget is $2,000-3,000, so the commitment to this program is a major one for a club of our size.

All donations for this project will be used to pay for the Diabetic Alert Dog. The Lion Club is a national charity and all donations are tax deductible. Receipts supplied upon request.

A brief update: we have met our goal and are no longer seeking donations! Thank you all so much! Through a combination of your generous donations, several fundraisers and outside donations, the Hedgesville Lions Club has reached its goal for Ty's Diabetic Alert Dog. This is just the beginning for Ty, as the dog will be trained and introduced into his household. Thank each of you again for being a part of this.
