Devon's Wheelchair Van Fundraiser

Our bright, kind-hearted 12-year-old grandson Devon is living with a degenerative, life-limiting, muscle disease called Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). He has recently lost his ability to walk; which is heartbreaking for him, his family and for us. Devon’s increasing disability has brought about many significant expenses for his family that are not covered by medical insurance.

Devon, who now weighs (120 lbs) can no longer get himself into the family vehicle on his own. It is getting extremely difficult for his parents, to lift him in and out of their vehicle without risking injury to Devon or themselves. Devon’s dad, Malcholm works away from home, two, and sometimes three weeks a month. Thus, it is that most of the time our daughter Elisa must manage Devon’s mobility needs herself. Devon’s only means of self-mobility is his motorized wheelchair which he must now use all the time.

Devon’s family is in urgent need of a specialized wheelchair van. A second-hand wheelchair van costs around $75,000. That kind of cost to their family income is prohibitive. Theirs is a one-income household as Elisa's full-time job is attending to Devon’s many medical needs and appointments and the many daily tasks he cannot do for himself, this in addition to also caring for their nine-year-old son, Everett.

We respectfully request that you support our grandson Devon's family in securing wheelchair van. Not only will it enhance his quality of life but it will considerably reduce the daily challenges that Devon's family face and will provide them with greater opportunities to have Devon engage in their community, and offer them a renewed sense of hope as they cope with the significant challenges posed by this terrible disease.
