Women's and Children's rights around the world are important indicators to understand global well-being. Yet, despite many successes in empowering women, numerous issues still exist. Women often work more than men, yet are paid less; gender discrimination affects girls and women throughout their lifetime. In Cambodia, there is still a long way to go for women and girls' rights.
And so it was an afternoon sometime in October 2017 that Isabelle decided to set herself a challenge- to take part in a 6-day sporting event to raise funds for Cambodian women. Having competed in the Raid Amazones ten years ago, Isa knew this would be an incredible team challenge. A week later, she brought together 5 other women to join her on this amazing journey at the 17th Season of Raid Amazones.
Raid Amazones is a French Sporting Event that takes place every year, with purpose of raising the profile on female empowerment. The event will take place in March 2018 around Angkor Wat, Siem Reap.
And so here we are, 6 women from all walks of life but with one common thread- our love for Cambodia. Be it working/ living in or visiting the country over the years, we were all brought together for our love for this Kingdom and a mutual passion to contribute to Cambodian society. In 2 teams of 3, we are the "DEVAS" from Cambodia, France and Malaysia, coming together after months of training to support each other to the finish line competing in adverse tropical jungle conditions:
Our goal- raise awareness of womens rights and help empower women in Cambodia competing in this outdoor competition. We carefully selected three charities that mean a lot to us:
- Shanty Town Spirit: funds will be allocated to the catch-up education program with sport at the center of this donation, as well as providing school fees/ equipment/ uniforms to the community children
- CDO: funds will be allocated to the shelter, which allows catch up education as well as medical assistance to children from vulnerable backgrounds. Their program also focuses on female empowerment and finding pathways towards financial sustainability. We have chosen to sponsor girls in particular within this organization
- Kampuchea Ballopp: all funds will be allocated to the community sports and recreation program, setting up large events- the financial breakdown includes sports pitch rental fee, all equipment, as well as transporting children to and from the event/ food and water.
We have amazing team spirit and need one more team member to support our efforts, that's why we need YOU. By joining hands with us, you not only give the opportunity to many young women to join a rugby team or learn soft skills, you are also creating societal change for a better Cambodia
We would love for you to join our journey and consider sponsoring our challenge in any way possible.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
The DEVAS Isabelle, Lidwina, Grace Marina, Mélanie & Clémence
