The Road to Excellence!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Deval Coleman. I am pleased to announce my acceptance into the historic and prestigious Tuskegee University. I am currently raising funds to cover the balance of my tuition for the 2018-2019 school year. Here, I will be majoring in Animal, Poultry, and Veterinary Sciences. Upon completion of my undergraduate studies, I will pursue and receive my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine.

Growing up as a young African-American male in Watts, I have always I wanted to make a better life for myself. I knew the only way this would be possible was if I pursued higher education. Not many people growing up in my neighborhood went to college, and when they did, they stayed in-state. I wanted to be different from most of my peers and not only go out of state, but even better, go to an Historically Black College/University (HBCU).

I am now a student at one of the top HBCUs in the nation, Tuskegee University. There are many different factors that helped me choose Tuskegee to be my home for the next 8 years. Founded by Dr. Booker T. Washington in 1881, Tuskegee University is rooted in a history of successfully educating African Americans to understand themselves against the background of their total cultural heritage and the promise of their individual and collective future. Tuskegee’s overall purpose is to nurture and challenge students to grow to their fullest potential. Tuskegee University prepares students to play effective professional and leadership roles in society and to become productive citizens in the national and world community. Tuskegee University continues to be dedicated to these broad aims.  Tuskegee is also the only HBCU with an accredited School of Veterinary Medicine.

Choosing a career that I want to spend the rest of my life doing was something that was extremely easy for me to figure out. My love for animals has always been the one constant in my life. I have always had pets and could not imagine what life would be like without animals in my life, so working with animals is something I know I will always be passionate about. I want a career that is going to challenge me and give me the opportunity to experience and learn new things every day and I want to be able to make a difference in the lives of animals and Tuskegee University will allow me to do so. Also, I want to help educate the public about the proper care of animals. Working as veterinarian will satisfy all of those needs while providing me with a rewarding career that I will continue to enjoy for the rest of my life. Although my mind is set to be a veterinarian there's all kinds of career paths to choose from as a veterinarian. It is hard to grasp the concept of selecting what career path to choose from that's going to be right for me; it would have to be something I will be interested in and want to pursue every day for the rest of my life. Two of those choices would be in zoological medicine and a veterinarian in an animal emergency hospital.

I appreciate all of your support and love as I pursue my journey to becoming Dr. Deval Amon Coleman, DVM at Tuskegee University!
