We are a group of 12 volunteers heading to Kenya summer 2020. Our bags will be filled with donated fabric and our skills learned at Designlab in Miami. We are overloaded with hope and determined to make an impact on a small village near Nairobi, Kenya.
20 new Brother sewing machines will be the tools used to complete a sewing center that will empower and change the lives of women and girls in this town. Our main project in our week long workshop is to teach them to make reusable pads and hygiene kits. We have learned of traumatic situations (and suicides! ) in this part of the world. Girls are turned away from school and work while on their periods. This lost time, feeling ashamed and dirty, affects not just themselves, but the family, the village, the country.
Our hope is that the first group of trained women will then be able to train others in the school, so that more and more women in the area will be empowered. Furthermore, they will create kits that could be eventually be sold to individuals, schools and other entities. The skill of sewing will open many opportunities and assist them in turning away from the cycle of poverty they current live in.
Meet some of our "Changers":
Ana, a junior at DASH "Going to Africa means that I can help empower girls, and change their mindset about their periods. These girls do not even own underwear! When they have their cycle they cannot go to school or work, so what we want to do is change that for them. Teaching them will empower not only the girls in Africa, but also our team. I am so excited to be hands on with the girls, and be able to learn from them a new skill".
Ariel, "I am honored to be a part of this inspiring trip. Going at the age of 16 will give me an amazing opportunity to connect with these girls on a real level. No young woman should be ashamed of their period and I can't wait to meet and empower them! This trip will not only change their life for the better, but mine too". (Ariel, a junior at DASH).
Caroline, 15 year old at Ransom Everglades. Design Lab student interested in apparel design and dedicated to helping others find their creative outlet. "learning to sew changed my life and knowing that I could give someone else that same feeling, while bettering their quality of life is amazing. I want to do whatever I can to make this trip a success".
Clara, 15 years old, studying Fashion Design at Design and Architecture School (DASH), feels strongly about women's empowerment in developing countries. "I believe that women are capable of anything, many women aren't given the chance to learn that about themselves, this is why I want to help" .
Emma, a 15 year old student at Design and Architecture Senior High School (DASH), focusing on Industrial Design, says she feels the need to help other girls. "It's tough enough to be a woman in this country, can't even imagine not having access to basic feminine needs. If I can make a difference, why not do it?"
Lua, 15, a student at Ransom Everglades. Interested in apparel design. "By going to Africa and teaching the girls how to sew will hopefully allow them to find the same passion in design that I found. It is so special to be a part of this project as it also gives them the opportunity to help their community by creating feminine products that they do not have access to".
Victoria, 16, a junior at Miami Arts Charter and a Designlab intern, "I think this is an amazing cause and will be life changing to all of us. I hope I will be able to change these girls' lives like I know they will change mine".
