Dementia is destroying my quality-of-life. You can St Ives Rotary to help me. Please watch our short video.

Australia is facing a massive increase in the number of people living with dementia and the Rotary Club of St Ives is committed to support them, their family caregivers, and their local community. But we need your help. We need your small donation.

Dementia is the largest cause of disability over the age of 65, but it is not a normal part of ageing. In fact dementia can appear in people who are in their 50’s, 40’s and even their 30’s.

Currently in Australia, there are over 413,000 individuals living with dementia and they are trying to function in their ever confusing world, and a new person is joining this population every 6 minutes.

Dementia describes the symptoms of a large collection of diseases that progressively destroy parts of a person’s brain and they gradually lose memory, lose the ability to think and rationalise, lose everyday social skills, and ultimately they lose the ability to communicate, to eat, to drink.

Dementia is the 2nd leading cause of death in Australia and there is no cure. A dementia diagnose does not mean that an individual requires to move into a care facility. There are strategies and support networks available to help individuals and their families to remain in their community, but many communities do not know how to recognise dementia or how to support individuals with this condition.

How can you help these vulnerable individual? Simple, your small tax deductable donation will help our volunteers at St Ives Rotary to continue hosting our FREE community education events where family caregivers and concerned friends can gain practical knowledge and understanding about dementia. Called – Discover the FACTS about Dementia – these successful events aim to remove the mystery and stigma of dementia by explaining what dementia is and more importantly what it is not…

Using simple non complicated terms and language to effectively inform and entertain these talks focus on learning the facts about dementia and include but no limited to:-

•Dementia - what it is and is not,

•What is the different between delirium, dementia and Alzheimer’s.

•What are the early signs?

•How to reduce the risk of developing dementia?

•Caring for someone with dementia,

•What communities can do support those living with dementia and their families.

Unfortunately, we of St Ives Rotary cannot stop the progression of dementia. There are medical experts and researchers working hard to develop a cure for this insidious condition that infiltrates all levels of community. But with your help we can support those living with dementia to remain within our local community as their try to live and function as normal as possible. Your kind donation will directly affect many of these vulnerable individual.
