Delhi Community Compost

Food waste in America is huge and many communities are taking steps to reduce that waste. Since we first heard of Vermont Compost Co. , it was our dream to start a smaller version of it here in upstate New York, using chickens to help make the compost.

We first took steps in 2013 when we teamed up with two local restaurants to recycle their food waste, and we've had a very successful (almost) 5 years. Our employees are Catskill Homesteader Chickens  which we've been breeding to be locally adapted and great foragers. They help convert the food waste and other "raw" materials into compost, contributing fertilizer along the way.

As the years passed, I dreamed of a day when we could expand our services to residential, commercial and other organizations in our Delhi, NY community. But several hurdles were in our path. The main one was we were still composting by hand. We needed equipment to properly pile and move the compost. The second, we needed more buckets, garbage cans and other containers for collecting and transporting the food waste. Third, the cost of gas has limited our range of where we can provide our services.

So, how can you help?

We invested in a used Toro Dingo mini track loader, but it needs new tracks which are anywhere from $500 to $800. Plus other maintenance and attachments like a bale spear for mulch round bales used in the composting process.

We need more garbage cans, buckets with lids, bins for transporting food scraps, which could easily add up to several hundred dollars more.

A better logo for our containers and to spread the word.
To have a professional logo designed isn't free, like this "first attempt" was.

Then, there's the reoccurring expense of gas for the Toro Dingo and our vehicles used to pick up the food waste.

So, whether it's $5, $20 or $100, every little bit will help us make our dream come true, while helping recycle food waste into food for local gardens, which will in turn provide healthy, nutritious food for many people. Perhaps, one day Delhi Community Compost will be NY's version of Vermont Compost Co.

Keep updated on our Facebook and Instagram accounts, as we'll be announcing giveaway prizes to the top 15 -20 donors.
