Background:
David Carter is a familiar face around campus at the University of Texas at Austin. Most students know him as the friendly panhandler on The Drag, yet few know he was once one of them.
Back in the 1970s, David was a studio art major with 87 hours of credit at UT Austin. He enjoyed drawing, reading history, and planned to become an artist. After succumbing to mental health issues, familial strains and bouts with substance abuse, David was unable to finish his degree and found himself on the streets for many years.
He has been yearning to return to his university ever since - and this year, he got the chance. David was readmitted to UT in Summer 2019 and a supportive alumnus is funding his tuition.
Need:
As all students know, college comes with so many costs on top of the tuition bill. David has subsidized housing through a local charity, yet has no means to obtain the other resources necessary to be a student. This fund is intended to cover the other expenses that David will need to be the most successful student he can be - textbooks, school supplies, a bus ticket, a clean wardrobe, a data plan, an occasional meal on campus - all items most students take for granted, but ones that David cannot provide for himself at this time.
The university and local activists have been incredibly supportive in securing all available resources and look into potential employment opportunities. These funds will ensure David has the initial means to continue his education as a successful and employable student.
*Donations will be managed by a third-party payee to ensure every dollar goes towards David's academic success. Donations will not touch Ryan's account and David will not have direct access to them. Any funds left over after David's needs are met will be donated to local non-profit organizations benefiting Texas homeless communities.*
