Nick's Medical Fund

I am writing to you now, in Nick Hansen’s honor. He and his wife Sarah need our help right now.

Anyone who has met Nick Hansen is struck by his sense of humor and incredible dedication to his family, friends, and work.Unfortunately this year he has found himself living a nightmare, that I wouldn’t wish upon my own worst enemy, let alone one our loved ones.

That nightmare is called Ulcerative Colitis, which is an autoimmune disease that attacks the colon (or large intestine) and is a member of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease  family. Essentially his immune system is staging a war against his colon, causing ulcers to form all over his colon which causes incredible amounts of pain, digestive problems, weakness, and anemia due to blood loss.

We have had the privilege to welcome Nick into our family this year, and as his sister in-law personally watched as his health took a downward spiral. My sister Sarah has been both his rock and caretaker, living up to her vows in every way.

He has been admitted to the hospital twice, the first time just two weeks after his wedding in June the second time soon after. Since then he has been placed on a continuous stream of medications, such as Prednisone, Humira, and many others. None of these medications have helped him achieve remission, which is the ultimate goal. Currently he is suffering more from the side effects than he is benefitting from them.

Last week, Nick was told by his medical team that his colon is not going to recover and needs to come out as soon as possible. Luckily, they can perform a surgery to create a new “colon” using parts of his small intestine.

This is a three part surgery, the first of which takes place this week on December 16th, where they will  remove Nick’s colon completely essentially curing him of his disease. This means he will temporarily have an ileostomy, a procedure where your small intestine is rerouted to exit out of your stomach into an attached bag.

Once Nick has healed from the first surgery, he will schedule the next surgery to create his new “colon”.

As you can imagine, the medical bills have been astronomical and continue to grow with every appointment and surgery. Any gift that you are able to give will go towards Nick’s medical bills and costs associated with his surgeries and recovery.

Let’s show Nick that the world is as generous and loving as he is.

Sincerely,

Hannah Zach
