dcRolePlay - US Open 2017

"I cried watching your new routine."

We, dcRolePlay, are trying to take a very special piece to the US Open this year, and we would like to request your support. Our routine was choreographed in the aftermath of the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting. Little did we know how much our message - "Rise Up" - would need to be repeated over, and over, and over again in the months to follow. We have been working hard this past year so that we can convey this message beautifully to the rest of the WCS world. However, many of our dancers are financially constricted; this is why we would love to have your support in putting this routine on the US Open floor. Costs to go to the Open are quite high, so any donation helps!

You: Who are you guys?
Us: Based in Washington, DC, dcRolePlay promotes visibility and acceptance of non-conforming gender roles in partner dancing. The team was founded in 2009 by LGBT dancers and joined by straight dancers who all lead and follow with the goal of creating team routines that feature fluidity in dance roles regardless of gender or orientation while expanding people's thoughts about the possibilities of swing dancing. For more than 6 years, the team has performed and competed at venues from local birthday parties to international competitions, demonstrating same-sex and gender-role neutral dancing is not only okay, but also adds an amazing dynamic to the dance. In 2015, the World Swing Dance Council rescinded its competition rules that required “men lead and ladies follow,” but there are still event directors who refuse to allow non-traditional gender-role dancing in their couples competitions. By competing at the U.S. Open, an event that is watched on internet TV by dancers around the world, the team will represent degendered dancing on the international stage and gender-role equality off the dance floor.
