Dear Friends, Family and Future Funders,
My name is Eugene Gragg and I was born and raised in San Francisco, California. I’m 23 years old and have worked with youth for the past six years. I started volunteering for the Stonestown Family YMCA of San Francisco and earned their ‘Youth Volunteer of the Year’ award in 2009 before graduating from high school. While volunteering at the YMCA I helped construct a Teen Center for High School youth who did not have computer access at home by participating in board meetings for all of the YMCA’s in San Francisco; in addition to this, I assisted with high school support outreach to get teachers and principles involved in making a space outside of school for their students. After volunteering at the Y, I was able to get a job there and I worked with youth year round in after-school programs and day camps.
After graduating from high school in 2009, I attended San Francisco State University as a freshman.
After a year at SFSU, I transferred to the University of San Francisco because I wanted more challenging course work, access to professors and the flexibility of attending a smaller school. Unfortunately, my new venture in education was cut short due to lack of funds and because I did not wish to return to SFSU, I decided to take GE courses at City College of San Francisco. While taking courses at City, I spent a lot of time researching schools that would have enlightening programs for my chosen career path and that were affordable.
After much thought and research, I have chosen to attend California State University, Channel Islands. Many factors went into my decision but I choose CSU, Channel Islands because it holds no more than 7,000 students, has a wonderful nursing program, and is known for influencing its community.
Since Channel Islands is a small school, I am sure that with my drive to succeed, I will be able to receive the attention from professors to help me understand and excel in my course work. This is especially important to me as I take prerequisite courses before applying to nursing school.
I chose to be a nurse because I need to do something about the healthcare gap between low-income and wealthy communities; healthcare is expensive and thus some families cannot afford quality care from hospitals – which is plainly unjust. My passion for this field is vital, because nurses are in high demand. If the people who can afford healthcare are in need of nurses, imagine what life is like for those who don’t have the necessary means for it.
As someone who has worked with youth, I know that I can become a great pediatric travel nurse. I am choosing to become a traveling nurse so that I may bring care and attention to underserved communities. Attending college is a costly choice but one that is critical to my success. Currently, I am in a financial deficit of six thousand dollars per year. I feel that this is an attainable goal if I have the support of friends, family and people who value quality healthcare for future generations.
