On May 24, 2017 the world lost an amazing woman and mother, Dawn James. Dawn had a love of many things, but above all she loved her children. I am proud and grateful to have had such a strong, amazing, loving, kind, selfless and spiritual woman to call my mom. I miss her and love her more than words can say. Dawn loved life and the lord. She lived every day to the fullest and when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2016, her first concern was for her children.
Mom lost her battle with cancer, but her fight was inspirational. Now we face a new battle of our own. Her medical bills were very high, leaving us almost nothing for her final expenses. As we grieve this difficult loss, we are now a family facing a terrible uphill climb.
We promised Dawn that she would go home, to Jamaica, to rest, but the money just isn't there. We spent everything we had to battle her cancer. We gambled on beating cancer, and we lost. Dawn lived with me in Boston while undergoing treatment. Living on my single income for over a year during her treatment was financially devastating and has left nothing in the bank for her final expenses. I also took time away from my work as a special education teacher to be her sole caretaker so she could die peacefully at home. I gave everything I had to give, now I'm asking for your help.
I am reaching out to the Jamaican community, both here and abroad, the families & friends of cancer victims and survivors everywhere, you all know the emotional and financial struggle we are facing. I'm also reaching out to my many friends in the Boston area, Dawn's friends & family in Jamaica, my fellow teachers and administrators and the many friends Dawn made on her Sunday treks to church at St. Stephen's in Lynn, Massachusetts where we are hoping to have her funeral service.
