"This is the saddest email/post I have ever written as a 4-H leader. I hope to never write another like this.
This evening I got a phone call that I never expected. A fellow 4-H leader called and asked if I had heard. I braced myself and asked, “No. What happened?” She proceeded to tell me that Dawn and Jackie Meyer were in a car accident and that Dawn passed away. She continued, saying Jackie is in a coma with a brain bleed, a broken pelvis and other injuries. My heart sank.
Dawn and Jackie joined the first year I started Bark Brigade. Jackie has become a very good dog handler and has been successful showing the beagles. I have enjoyed watching her skills develop year to year. She clearly enjoys training and loves her dogs.
Like many 4-H moms, Dawn supported Jackie’s love of animals. Soon after we met, Dawn came upon an offer she couldn’t refuse and followed through with getting Jackie a horse to show. Being a horse girl myself, I loved hearing about Jackie’s lessons, skills and everything horse related. Jackie was most recently practicing for competitions involving shooting bow and arrow while on horseback.
Another thing that touched me (maybe because I have all boys) was that Dawn always put Jackie in a pretty dress and did Jackie’s hair before Fair. She would usually discuss the dress with me well beforehand to make sure it met guidelines. On show day, Jackie would look so pretty and put together. A sign of her mother’s care and love.
I am extremely sad for Jackie and her family to have lost Dawn. I am very concerned about Jackie’s injuries as she is in critical condition."
