It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Harris, husband to Elaine and father to Pat and Seanie.
Dave Harris was one of Field Hockey Foundation's founding fathers. His early days as a player morphed into umpiring and coaching. He became an elite Umpire and earned his FIH badge and travelled with the US mens national teams to tournaments around the world.
Dave's fingerprints are all over the FHF Moorpark facility as a leader in our volunteer organization. Dave was integrally involved with the construction and installation of our first astroturf field in 1994 and followed up with the construction of the player area in 1995. He also built and wired up the snack shack and hi performance room in 2000.
Dave and Elaine's pride and joy are Pat and Seanie who were given hockey sticks in the crib and despite a few scars were encouraged to play the game from an early age. Pat and Sean played at all levels for the US national program from junior to senior teams. Pat has been playing professionally in Europe for many years and Seanie has had playing experiences in Germany and Western Australia. They were both selected to play in WL2 for the US in India last year.
When the boys were teenagers, Dave established the Mystery team which was a defacto US junior national team. Many national team players started out in the " Mystery" program and travelled to Holland at Easter to play or to Vancouver anytime of the year. Dave never took any compensation for his years of coaching and raised enough money through team fundraisers to ensure that no one was denied a chance to play for their country due to financial hardship.
Dave and Elaine opened the Harris household to hundreds of hockey families over the last 2 decades with many US national players enjoying the Harris hospitality at their hockey home in Moorpark. Dave and Elaine were founding members of the US mens booster club which helps raise ( and distribute) additional funds for members of the US national mens team and US junior mens teams. They have provided new turf shoes and shin guards for both teams and helped offset food and travel costs in other situations. They have hosted a thanksgiving dinner at their community pool and recreational house for the US Junior mens team and the opposing Canadian team for the past 3 years.
Sadly Dave left this earth on Feb 26th after a long and painful illness. Elaine had taken off much of the last 18 months to care for Dave as had other members of the family. We are all heartbroken at the loss of our friend and his loss to his wife, children and grandchildren. Dave had a great sense of humor and a love for life that extended far beyond the hockey field.
