Hi! My name is Charla and my fiance, David Steele, is getting a kidney transplant on December 29. David was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2014 and has been on the transplant list for about 3 years. His friend Michael started the process of becoming a donor earlier this year and as of Wednesday, November 18, both David and Michael completed the final hurdles to be approved for transplant.
When I met David in early 2015, I was instantly attracted to his sense of humor and positive attitude. In our time together, I have watched him face many health challenges including his continued struggle with diabetes, 2 total knee replacements, and getting his leg prosthetic and learning how to walk again. Through all of this, he has maintained his positivity, sense of humor, and bright smile and he has been my support while we go through these trials together.
As we approach this next hurdle in our life together, we are asking for your support. Aside from actual transplant, there are a lot of associated costs with this surgery. David will be hospitalized for about a week after the transplant and then will be required to stay in Nashville near the hospital for another several weeks for daily hospital visits and in case any problems arise during this critical time. For the first 6 months to a year post transplant, David will require frequent lab visits and doctor appointments to ensure continued success with his new organ.
I will be going on FMLA without pay starting the day of surgery and will be out of work for almost the entire month of January. Even after I return to work, I will have to take off several days a month to transport David to his numerous appointments. Your donations will go directly towards paying bills while I am out of work, hotel stays in Nashville, transportation costs, and other costs associated with this surgery and aftercare.
