David Davenport's triple transplant

Donation protected
David Davenport was born December 16th, 1988 at a military hospital in South Carolina. It was there, hours from discharge, that a vigilant nurse urged doctors to consider that there might be a problem.

David was born with hypoplastic left heart, and transposition of the greater arteries, as well as anti-thrombin 3 deficiency. Simply put, he is missing a ventricle, and his heart has been adapted surgically to compensate. He has “half a heart”.

The prognosis was not good. Davids’ young parents were offered a life saving palliative surgical intervention - that would be done in 3 stages. His first open heart surgery, a Norwood, was completed when he was just days old. He was surgeon Dr. Robert Sade’s first living child after this procedure. By the time he was 2, David had undergone 3 open heart surgeries: the Norwood, Hemi-Fontan, and Fontan.

The understanding of David’s complicated medical history was that he would eventually require a heart transplant, as the surgeries he received were not a permanent fix, but merely a bandaid. As David has grown into adulthood, he has suffered increased complications due to his underlying congenital heart defect. His lungs now only operate at 37% capacity.

Dave is now in need of a heart, lung and liver transplant in order to survive.

The name David means “beloved”. He is beyond loved. He is a hard working man. He is a wonderful husband to his wife, Anahied- and a doting father to his toddler daughter, Diana. He is the second of seven siblings. He has two nephews and a niece whom he adores. David works full time as a software developer, and will soon need to take a reprieve from his work to complete this procedure.

David is no stranger to hard work, or jumping hurdles. Up until a surgical procedure at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in July of 2020, he spent 2 full days a week for 13 years at a local hospital. It was there that he would work from his hospital bed, while he received treatments that kept him alive and well.

He is, quite literally- a full time husband, full time father, and full time worker with half a heart, and only 37% left of his lung function. In talking to him, you might never know it. David is one of the most grounded, happy, and good humored men you could ever encounter. He is kind, funny, intelligent- and generous with his time.

David, Anahied and Diana will be moving from Illinois to Florida in the next few weeks.  David needs to be near the hospital so he is available for transplant on a moment's notice.  The doctor expects that they will live there at least 2 years.  David will need to be evaluated for a year after transplant to ensure his body does not reject the new organs.  While David has good insurance, several of his medications will not be covered and, as you can imagine, this transplant will cost more than any family can cover.

Our world deserves more than 32 years of David Davenport. Please, partner with us to help support David and his family, as they continue to navigate an arduous, and unfortunate set of circumstances.”
