Dave's Journey
In August 2016, Dave went into the doctor with what he thought was a sinus infection. He was hospitalized because his blood levels were very abnormal. Dave was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Luekemia or MDS and he spent fifteen days in the hospital undergoing many tests and transfusions.
Over the next seven months, Dave was treated by Dr. Burke at the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center in Aurora, Colorado. He was put on a trial medication and did seven rounds of chemotherapy. Dr. Burke was able to get the cancer cells down to 1.5%, so Dave was ready for a bone marrow transplant.
Dr. Burke referred Dave to Dr. Gregory from the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute (CBCI) in Denver and they discussed an allogeneic hematologic stem cell transplant. Dave's siblings were screened and his sister, Mary, was a 10 out of 10 match. His family was ecstatic!
On May 12, 2017, Dave checked into St. Luke's Presbyterian Hospital in Denver to begin his pre-transplant regimen. After six days of tests, high doses of chemotherapy and medications, Dave was ready for his bone marrow transplant. At this same time, CBCI had Mary preparing her cells for the bone marrow procedure.
May 18, 2017 was Day O or Transplant Day! Mary did her stem cell donation in the morning and later in the day, over 7 million marrow cells were infused intravenously to Dave. He slept through the process, as his family waited.
Dave had great care in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at St. Luke's. He followed his doctors' and nurses' instructions and by Day 14 after tranplant, he was discharged. The staff and his family were trilled with his progress.
After having a stem cell transplant, Dave has many things to worry about-- a risk for developing graft versus host disease, infections, organ damage, needing 24/7 care for 100 days, just to name a few--but one of his biggest worries is being out of work for six months to a year or more.
At Day +19, after many prayers, Dave's body is responding and the engraftment process is well on it's way. His family is covering the caregiving and his medical team is helping him to move to the next step of recovery. But still, Dave could use your help! He needs your continued prayers, but he also needs help covering some of his medical expenses and costs, while he's unable to work.
