Dear friends and family,
My dad, Dave was admitted to the hospital on Feb 1st after my mom came home to find him collapsed and seizing. He was taken to Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach, MO and immediately airlifted to University Hospital in Columbia, MO. It was found he had a large, baseball-sized, tumor in his brain that was hemorraging. Once in Columbia, he was stabilized and the bleeding stopped. He is scheduled to have surgury to remove the tumor Feb 8th. Further tests have discovered masses on his kidney and possibly his lungs. The doctors believe he has kidney cancer which has metastisized to the brain. We will know more as further testing is done.
The first step is brain surgery, then they will mostly likely use medicine or surgery to addres the kidney cancer, as chemotherapy is generally ineffective in this situation.
My dad is a diabetic and has been having health issues in the last 6-8 months. My parents have been seeing mulitple doctors to try to figure out why he was feeling poorly. Unfortunately, things move very slowly through the VA (and they live 2 hours from the closest hospital they are authorized to visit), so there had not been any scans or blood work done that may have uncovered this cancer. It is very frustrating.
All of this to say- there will be a LOT of medical bills. My dad is a Veteran but receives a low level of coverage through the VA. He is retired and collects social security, which is already being garnished for previous medical bills.
My parents have always been very hardworking, to support the five of us growing up and now a grandson as well, but they are of very humble means. There is not a lot, financially, for them to turn to in these times. I am not asking to make anyone else responsible for that, but would love to create some peace of mind during this time.
Any help they recieve from you will go toward medical bills, to prevent his social security check from being depleted further, and he can still collect a living wage.
