Wij zijn Maarten & Thomas en gaan op de fiets richting China. Op 25 april vertrekken we, om in zes maanden 10.000 kilometer te fietsen. Natuurlijk gaan we voor het avontuur, maar we fietsen ook voor een goed doel. Een doel waar we persoonlijk connectie mee hebben: dARTling!
dARTling is een project dat haar oorsprong heeft in het dorp Darling in de Westkaap van Zuid-Afrika. Een dorp met 10.000 inwoners waarvan 90% van gekleurde afkomst en woont in een township. Eenvoudige en kleine woningen waar dikwijls met meerdere generaties in wordt gewoond. In de jaren 2016 – 2018 werkte Thomas’ vader, met financiering en studenten van Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten uit Tilburg aan het project The Darling Collection. Met verhalen van de verschillende inwoners als bron voor een jaarlijks festival met muziek, dans en theater.
Ik, Thomas, heb met eigen ogen gezien wat de impact ervan was op mensen die leven in een land met ongelijke kansen en groeiende criminaliteit. Muziek maken, dansen en acteren, en daarmee je eigen kunnen inzetten en je talent aan anderen tonen. In het jaar 2018 werd ook een begin gemaakt met het project dARTling, louter gericht op de ontwikkeling van talenten van jongeren en jonge kinderen. Op dit moment bestaat het bestuur van stichting dARTling uit vijf ex-studenten die betrokken waren bij de edities van The Darling Collection. Ze werken nu, meestal op afstand, aan de opzet van activiteiten in Darling, waarin ze jongeren en kinderen enthousiasmeren om eigen talenten te ontdekken.
Na in 2016 te zijn begonnen in een tent, later in de buitenlucht en een lege kerkzaal, is er inmiddels een vast gebouw beschikbaar. Een eigen en veilige locatie, een plek waar ze zich thuis voelen, voor de meesten van ons zo gewoon, voor hen vaak moeilijk te realiseren.
Ze willen die ruimte graag vullen met muziekinstrumenten, apparatuur en een heuse danszaal. Om hen te laten dansen, zingen en spelen fietsen wij 10.000 kilometer. Voor elke kilometer die we fietsen een euro. En die euro die jij voor onze actie doneert komt rechtstreeks terecht bij stichting dARTling.

Hi there! We are Maarten & Thomas and we’re cycling to China. On the 25th of April we will depart from the Netherlands and in six months, we will bike 10.000 kilometers. Of course our main goal is to embark on the adventure. However, we have decided to cycle for a good purpose as well. We’ve chosen a charity close to our hearts: the dARTling foundation. dARtling is a project with its origin in the village of Darling, at the Western Cape of South Africa. A village with 10000 inhabitants of which 90% with a colored background, living in a township. Here you will find relatively small and simple houses where often multiple generations live together under the same roof.
Throughout the years 2016-2018, Thomas’ father worked on the Darling Collection Project, financed by and together with students of Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts in Tilburg. Personal stories of the people of Darling inspired them to create a yearly festival with music, dance and theatre.
I, Thomas, have seen with my own eyes how this project impacted the people who grew up in a country with unqual opportunities and rising crime rates. They made music together, danced and played theatre. This empowered them to share their incredible talent with others.
In 2018 a side-project was born, dARTling, which focused on the development of talent in children and youngsters in Darling. At the moment, the board of the dARtling foundation consists of five ex-students who all participated in the Darling Collection. They are creating activities and opportunities in Darling, with which they are stimulating young people to explore their own talents.
In 2016 they started in to work in a tent. Later on in an empty church hall. Right now, a building has been made available for them. A safe space to feel at home, which is so common for most of us, but in Darling often hard to reach. The dARTling foundation wants to fill up that space with musical instruments and a real dancing room. We are cycling 10.000 kilometers so they can dance, sing and play. 1 euro for each kilometer. The money that you will donate goes straight to the dARTling foundation. Please follow us and be generous.
