Darnell: A Nurse In Need of Care

DARNELL'S STORY....

2021 means so much more to me than the ushering in of a new year; I begin this new year with a renewed hope in the promises of tomorrow.

As a nurse and caregiver of 28 years, I find myself in the difficult position of standing in need of care. With the ongoing challenges of my Leukemia diagnosis, I recently learned that I have exhausted my treatment options and am in need of a bone marrow transplant. I am extremely blessed and grateful to have found a donor match in my sister, Helena Prejean. Helena and I are both feeling our best and will begin our transplant journey next week, January 20th. Despite my medical challenges, I have been able to answer the ‘call of duty’ and continue my work as a nurse during this time when our community, our country has needed all trained caregivers to give their all. As many are aware, I am also a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer with the D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home and had the opportunity and honor to assist grieving families when loved ones were transitioning. There is something so special and sacred about helping people to heal as well as to transcend this physical world; nurturing and caring for others spiritual needs in words and sometimes "in song," is something I do with great joy. So it is has truly been my privilege to care for others at these critical points in life as I firmly believe that ‘if I can help somebody, then my living will not be in vain.’

I am filled with Faith and Hope, knowing that God has work yet for me to do.

I ask for your continued support and fervent prayers throughout the phases of my recovery over the next year.  I will be hospitalized for quite some time after the transplant, followed by secluded in-home convalescence with only my mother as my primary caregiver.  I have been advised that my total recovery period will be about 12 months and so my savings are not nearly enough to carry me through my healing journey. I ask now for your assistance to help me to only maintain my cost of living and medical expenses through year’s end. Any assistance, prayers and words of encouragement will be greatly appreciated (and can be shared on this GoFundMe page).

I certainly hope I have been able to make a difference in many of my family and friends’ lives and look forward to the day when I can be the “giver” again and be a Blessing to others.

I am looking forward to sharing in the promises of tomorrow. I am truly blessed with the love of family and friends. Please be in prayer with me as well as my family. My Faith is Strong and God’s Love for me is Stronger!

To God Be the Glory for the Things He Has Done and Will Do….
