Those of you who know me have probably seen my posts regarding my much anticipated kidney transplant that is scheduled for mid-November. This will be a life changer for me. I have been on dialysis three days a week for over three years, and although I am grateful for its function (that of keeping me alive), I am more than ready to sever the tether! The reality of this has me looking at all aspects of the process.
Medicare will cover most of the medical procedures, but there are many other associated expenses that, frankly, I just don't know how I'm going to cover. I have never been one to ask for anything, so this is hard for me. Our savings have been depleted over the past few years, as I was no longer able to work much, and of course, I won't be able to work again until I've regained my strength and stamina. Yet the household bills keep rolling in. That, along with the very expensive anti-rejection drugs that I will need for the rest of my life, have prompted me to ask for your help. Sue's employer has been gracious enough to allow her all the time needed for my after-care, but much of that has to be close to the Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She will be traveling north and south several times during the next few months, and then taking a few more weeks off when I'm finally able to come home.
As I said, this is a life changer. But no one ever said it would be easy! You can't even imagine how hard it is to ask someone for their kidney. And then to have to ask for financial help.
