The day started like any other, Danny went to his favorite place ; work (ok, it may not be his FAVORITE). He worked his full shift and started on home. It was during his ride home that his life changed in an instant.
Our dear coworker Danny was on his way home when he started slurring his speech and had trouble breathing. He decided to stop by a clinic, not feeling well. He had a seizure at the doctor's office. The doctor's office had him transported by ambulance to Civista hospital where he had another seizure. The doctors gave him anti-seizure medicine which started an allergic reaction causing his throat to swell. An emergency tracheotomy was performed to open his airway. A Cat scan revealed a mass on the right side of the brain. He was being prepped to be flown to Washington Hospital Center and had another seizure. After finally stabilizing Danny, he was rapidly transported to DC by the MEDSTAR chopper. Danny had a brain tumor spanning from behind his right eye, all the way to the back of his head, the cause of his seizures and slurred speech.
Danny had brain surgery on Friday morning. They removed most of the tumor, the remainder will require radiation and chemotherapy. It was cancer, but it had not spread to any other parts of Danny’s body. The swelling has gone down around his throat and they are preparing to remove his breathing tube.
He will have to be in the hospital for at least 3-4 weeks and will have months of rehabilitation afterwards.
Danny is facing a long road to recovery and a ton of medical bills. We can't even begin to estimate what the costs will be in the end, or if there will be an end. Short term and long term disability are only a fraction of what his salary is.
