In simplest terms-
Daniel’s immune system attacks his kidneys.
This disease is called Immunoglobulin A nephropathy. It is an autoimmune disease and it causes scarring throughout the filters in his kidneys (Focal Segmental GlomuleroSclerosis) making them not function.
U.S. doctors have done what they can to try and hold back the symptoms, but are not able to treat the disease. Daniel has been on countless medications, including high doses of immunosuppressant steroids, that have taken a toll on him physically, mentally, and emotionally (if you saw his weight change, moon face, or lose his cool in the past couple years). His nephrologist is suggesting that the next step is more rounds of even more dangerous medications (transplant meds that will shut down his immune system in hopes that his kidneys have a window of time to heal a little. Only another temporary solution) but he is unsure if he can endure any more of these debilitating drugs. We now have an opportunity to seek new treatment outside of the United States, but this groundbreaking treatment is expensive and not covered by his family’s insurance.
Daniel does not like to ask for help from others, he tries to always put on a smile and joke around, and doesn’t let people know how tired and weak he feels because of this autoimmune disease and the countless medications he’s been on and off of. He is a father, a husband, a friend, and a roadie. We’d love for him to be around for a long time for his family and friends, and finding new treatments for this disease is the best way to do that.
