In March of 2017 my daddy took a pretty bad fall, landing on his head and knocking him unconscious. He was rushed to the ER via ambulance due to my momma and sisters quick actions. By the grace of God he woke up and was able to go home that night. While we were all happy he was home there were still problems and many unanswered questions. Shortly thereafter, following many ER visits, my father was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. With the initial discovery, we also learned that the cancer had metastasized into his spine. Not news that any family wants to hear. We began Chemo and radiation treatments as quickly as time would allow. Conference calls with my momma, brother, and sister became a common, scary thing. They were rarely filled with good news.
We initiated Chemo and radiation treatments as soon as possible after receiving news of dad’s condition. In between the hospital stays and doctor’s appointments, momma was working and trying to ensure daddy made it to his Chemo and radiation appointments. Mom ended up having to take time off from work to care for daddy as it slowly became a full-time job in itself. With the help of friends and family it was manageable in the beginning.
In November 2017 daddy was diagnosed with Osteomyelitis of the sternum. He was sent to Scott and White in Temple as no other facilities would take him due to his multiple problems and need for a specialist that wasn’t available just anywhere. Due to this infection the Chemo could not be continued. Treatment of the infection and chemo treatments contradict each other so we were faced with the decision of having to treat the infection before we could continue any cancer treatments. As if this wasn’t enough, daddy (on one of his good days) was outside on Thanksgiving day and his pants leg caught on fire, leaving his with terrible burns to his ankle and foot. He has since had to have a debridement of the dead tissue and a graft placed to aid in healing.
Momma has had to start to work full-time again. She has to work to keep the insurance she has on daddy or they will lose treatment he has been receiving with home health and his at home antibiotics. With the help of friends and family we are doing everything we can to have someone at home taking care of daddy 24/7. He cannot be left alone at this point and requires constant care. Unfortunately; even as a distinguished veteran, my father does not qualify for assistance through the VA when it comes to home care.
I am telling you all our story, not for sympathy, but to ask for your help. Momma doesn’t make enough to pay their bills, pay for all the gas to get daddy to and from doctor’s visits and such, and to pay an aid to help take care of my father. He truly does require 24/7 care and it doesn’t just take one person. It takes at least 2 people, and quite honestly, my momma just needs help.
Please consider helping my family care for my father in this trying time. We simply want to enjoy what time we have left with him and that will be so much easier if the financial struggle was lessened.
