Dagbe COVID-19 Relief Fund

DECEMBER 2020 [update]

UPDATE: Since launching back in May, we have raised over $12,000 to provide direct cash assistance to Dagbe staff and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to everyone who donated and helped spread the word! We are truly in awe of the kindness and generosity displayed by the entire worldwide Dagbe community.

⬆️Check out the video (above) to hear from Dagbe staff in their own words.

Unfortunately, as the pandemic continues to rage, Dagbe will AGAIN lose most or all of its bookings for 2021. This means we need all hands on deck again to help us reach our NEW goal of $25,000. We can do it, but only with your help!

To provide direct financial support to Dagbe's staff and their families during this difficult time, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Dagbe Institute USA, Inc. ("Dagbe USA"), the US-based non-profit we've established to handle donations. The money raised will be distributed directly to Dagbe staff members (instructors, groundskeepers and kitchen crew) as a monthly stipend.

To help with social distancing, staff will receive their salaries via Mobile Money, a popular technology in Ghana that allows people to receive, store and spend money using a mobile phone (sometimes called a “mobile wallet”). Any funds raised in excess of the amount needed will go toward salaries for 2022 (if necessary), as well as Dagbe operating costs.

MAY 2020 [original post]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Dagbe Cultural Institute & Arts Centre in the village of Kopeyia, Ghana, has had all of its 2020 bookings cancelled, resulting in upwards of $24,500 in lost revenue. This devastating setback leaves Dagbe without the financial resources to pay its dedicated staff during what is usually the busiest time of the year. In addition, COVID-19 has spread to Ghana, badly hobbling the economy and making it virtually impossible for staff to find alternate sources of income.

We are reaching out to you and the rest of the extended worldwide Dagbe community for help. Please consider making a donation in any amount so that Dagbe's employees can continue to support their families without having to venture out during the pandemic to seek other work. Your support will not only help families in Kopeyia stay safe, but will ensure that Dagbe and the rich traditions it teaches can thrive for years to come.

The Dagbe Cultural Institute & Arts Centre  is located in the scenic coastal village of Kopeyia in Ghana's Volta Region. The mission of Dagbe is to sustainably preserve traditional West African and Ewe culture by bringing the enduring economic benefits of a successful cultural tourism business to the local community. Founded by the late Godwin Agbeli, his legacy is now carried on by his children — most notably the current director, Emmanuel Agbeli.
