URGENT: We’ve watched as journalists, neighbors, clergy, and children have been met with violent and militarized police reaction as they protest in Ferguson after the most recent shooting of an unarmed Black youth by police forces. We’ve also seen a community come together to support itself and demand justice. They’ve sparked a movement DEMANDING we value Black life, yet those leading this movement continue to be met with violent repression, continue to have their voices silenced by racist narrative framing mainstream news sources, and continue to struggle. The time for solidarity is NOW.
We are raising money to help support a van of NYC-based artists and activists traveling to Ferguson for PRODUCTIVE participation in the movement, IN LINE WITH THE NEEDS/REQUESTS of the community.
The trip will take place Labor Day weekend.
Included in the group as it stands are filmmakers, youth theatre educators, a psychological emergency responder, musicians, visual artists and grassroots activists. We will participate in agendas already set in place by organizations like Black Life Matters and the Organization for Black Struggle. We will also listen to those who have been on the ground to learn how to best contribute our skills while there and build local solidarity movements.
Lastly, we will produce a short film to record and highlight the love, compassion and people-power on display daily in the streets of Ferguson. While remembering that Black lives matter and Black is powerful, we must also always remember BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL.
Your donations will help us afford:
-transportation (van rental, gas, tolls)
- lodging (hotels, as we’d like to not put a strain on the already limited housing situation for non-locals)
-the purchase of requested materials (i.e. water, food, toys, protective gear for protesters facing tear gas, etc.)
