Mom's funeral expenses

My mom passed away after suffering terribly with a very rare brain disorder similar to ALS. So, as if this hasn't been tragic enough for my family and my dad who just lost the love of his life and best friend since 13 yrs.  old. The ins. company decided to scam us. After telling us 4 times plus telling the funeral director to go ahead with the services. That she was covered and even told us how much for. A month after all was said and done they send a letter stating they can't honor her portion of my parents policy that has been paid for since 1976. Our lawyer has told us that even with recorded phone calls stating she was covered, the way they cover things up, we will never get them to honor it at this point. So long story short, we have funeral expenses now way over due that my dad cannot afford to pay and the funeral home wants to be paid. Which I don't blame them.)  Dad had a heart attack (legit) after hearing this. Some friends have offered to have a benefit for him cause this is so ridiculous. But i figured we'd try this first and see if we could reach our goal. So please, whatever you can do to help me to relieve this unnecessary stress so he can go on and try to mourn properly.
