Social Work in South Africa

As many of you know, I am earning my Master's in Social Work at the University of Denver. In my concentration, Sustainable Development and Global Practice, we are developing our practices in human, animal, and planetary health advocacy, the importance of culture and reciprocal learning, and building and maintaining reciliency and community well-being.
With my BA in International Studies in Anthropology and Third World Studies (focusing in African countries), I am combining my studies, and finally heading to South Africa to continue my education.
The Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) at DU has partnered with Educo Africa in South Africa, giving us the opportunity to spend two weeks learning more about social work in this culturally diverse area of the world and for us to lend support in organizations in which we feel passionate. I have asked to learn beside social workers working with children who have lost their parents to the AIDS epidemic. This has been a passion of mine for many years and I'm taking another step in my journey.
On November 17th, the Dean of GSSW, James Herbert Williams, will accompany a group of us to Cape Town, to participate in an experience that has "intentionally been designed NOT to be cultural voyeruism, tourism, or a means to provide charity." We will focus on "capacity building and empowerment strategies and provides an opportunity for students to learn from community residents" (SOWK 4990).
The course fee is $3200. The dean is working to lower the costs and the final cost may change.
It's not easy to ask for financial assistance, this is an opportunity to share my passion and to someday pay-it-forward. There is no pressure and, as always, your love and encouragement are most important to me. Thank you!
