Tammy has been behind the scenes for many years helping those that have no voice by promoting, sharing and raising awareness for homeless animals. Now it is Tammy that needs help from her friends and community.
Tammy was diagnosed with Acinic Cell Carcinoma (Cancer of the Salivary Gland) in the spring of 2010 and fought herself into remission and then into "cured" status the following year. While the side effects of treatment have not been easy, hearing the word "cured" brought a sense of relief. Much to everyone's surprise, her biggest fear came true and the cancer returned earlier this summer.
Even though Tammy has the same cancer, the presentation has been quite different. The cancer is now fast growing with very aggressive behaviors. After many doctor's visits with her wonderful team of two Oncologists and two surgeons, Tammy went through an aggressive surgery to remove the tumor and a nerve graft to help her regain some facial functions. The surgery was a success as far as removing the tumor, but the new challenge is what the next step is.
While her team of doctors is among Roanoke's best, her cancer is quite rare and Tammy's experience is way beyond the norm. Most oncology teams have hundreds, if not thousands, of cases to review and learn from. Acinic Cell Carcinoma is so rare her team only has a handful of cases to compare in order to plan future medical needs.
The next step has been decided that Tammy needs to consult with a doctor at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He is known as the guru of her type of cancer. Unfortunately, Mount Sinai does not accept Tammy's insurance and the travel expense is beyond her means. We need to raise enough money to get Tammy to the doctor she desperately needs to see. Any money raised will go directly towards the travel expenses as well as the consult fee itself.
I know she will be forever grateful for any help you can give. Tammy has two young children who are her world and she needs to be here for them.
