GoFundMeow: Percy's Vet Bills
From Darrin and Annabelle to our family, friends, and community:
As some of you may know, our dear, fluffy, friendly, 3-year-old cat Percy has recently endured a series of urinary issues, starting with him peeing blood throughout the house while we were away for a weekend in June. Our wonderful roommates took him to the vet, as did we when we returned the next day. He was sent home with antibiotics, although the urinalysis eventually came back negative for infection, indicating that he might instead have crystals in his bladder.
A couple weeks later, the crystals caused a life-threatening blockage that required Percy to be hospitalized. What was initially supposed to be a two-day procedure involving a catheter and I.V. was extended to three days, then four, then five, causing our stress and worry to mount alongside our vet bills. Since payment for each additional day was required up front, we struggled with the practicalities of finding emergency credit sources while simultaneously confronting the reality that neither a full or lasting recovery were guaranteed. The most difficult of questions arose.
Thankfully, Percy's condition improved just before our credit ran out, and he was able to come home, where he has been slowly regaining his health and energy along with some of the weight that he lost during his hospital ordeal. He has been sleeping a LOT, and has been eating a special low-alkaline diet, taking Chinese herbs, and receiving medication to help his bladder relax. He still whines occasionally after peeing, but overall he is doing quite well!
Unfortunately, the same can not be said for our finances. The vet bills have added up to over $4,000, and given that we generally live hand-to-mouth like most Americans, even the monthly credit card payments will be challenging for us to make. Add to this the fact that we have been trying to save money for an upcoming move to the Santa Cruz area, and for the birth of our first child in December. (For some of you, this may be big news!)
During our moments of feeling overwhelmed and fearful, we have tried to remember that we are not alone. Indeed we are blessed with an amazing circle of friends and family members, some of whom know and love Percy as much as we do. Although times are tough for everyone, we are dearly hoping that some of you might be willing and/or able to help us with our emergency credit card debt before the introductory rate expires and the extremely high interest kicks in!
