Legal Fees

On 8/2/14 my husband and I were at a friends farm shooting guns safely. We had done many times before over the past 7 years of knowing this person. After about 2 hours of shooting, the homeowner noticed some people in a field on a hill about 1/4 mile away. He told everyone to stop shooting, even though we were not shooting in that direction. We all stopped shooting and we attempted to get their attention, so they could move out of the field. We thought they were local farm workers just hanging out. After a couple of minutes, we saw cop cars going by that location and about 20 minutes later they showed up at my friends house with their guns drawn.

By the time the police showed up, we had stopped shooting, taken down our target and started to put away our guns, because we were ready to eat and it was getting dark. The police proceeded to tell us that some of the bullets hit a house. The only houses that are around are no less than 1/2 mile away, up a hill and behind a forest of trees. According the this logic, our bullets would have had to ricochet off the plowed field we were shooting in to, gain velocity, go up hill, straighten out, go through a heavy forest of trees, with out hitting any of the trees then hit a house. A number of bullets would have had to do this, meaning they would have had to ricochet off the same spot every time. The police then told us it was they in the field and we were using fully automatic weapons, shooting at them. We don't own fully auto anything, nothing has been modified either. So they had two different stories they were giving us.

We practice and take gun safety seriously. We have been shooting since we were both very young and would never put another person in danger with the use of a fire arm. Anytime we saw a car pass by in the far distance, we waited until they were gone to continue shooting. We also both have our concealed handgun permit, something you can only get after taking gun safety courses and having background checks done. Again, gun safety is something we never take lightly!

They questioned 6 of us and after feeling like our stories didn't match up, even though they did, they charged all 6 of us with reckless endangerment!!!!

A few days after this happened. I went to the ER for stomach pains and ended up having an appendectomy while 7 weeks pregnant. I had to disclose the charge to my work and a few hours after getting out of surgery, they called me to tell me that I was on unpaid admin leave until the charges had been resolved. So I am correctly not working until the charges get dropped, not getting a paycheck, pregnant, with out health insurance and will soon have a very large hospital bill. Luckily, the hospital has a scholarship program we can apply for.

Since I am not working and not bringing in any money, my husband is the only person earning money and we are not able to afford a lawyer. The lawyer I spoke to suggested we get our own lawyers so we are not held accountable if one of us were to be convicted and the other was not. So I am asking for donations for legal fees. The lawyer I want to represent me has a $150 retainer and we also need money to get my husband a lawyer as well; that is why we are asking for $3000. For my lawyer, his lawyer and any extra fees. Our court date was set for Sept 1 but will be changed due to it being labor day.
