I am on an incredible journey. Thank you to all of my family, friends, colleagues, and everyone else who has somehow found this page. I hope that each of you will consider donating to the effort to cure ALS. Most people believe that ALS is a disease that leads to death. I believe something different. I am confident that we will develop a cure.
It can’t be done alone. I can’t do it without you. You and I are not alone. There are others who have helped by writing my words for you to read because my hands can no longer type them. There are those who have designed our website, produced videos, and helped get things organized on a day-to-day basis. While the muscles in my arms and legs no longer move as I wish them, there is a whole team of doctors, scientists, caregivers, and alternative health providers who are fighting for me - with me. This is an incredible journey and you can be part of the team that will radically change what we know about ALS and what we know about medicine too.
So, here’s the million-dollar question: Why do I think we can cure ALS?
Because we have to cure it. My life and thousands of people with ALS deserve a cure. It's been over 80 years.
Because it took so long for me to get a diagnosis, I’ve wasted so much time already. For months they told me that the initial symptoms were something else - a muscle strain, a pull, or a pinched nerve. All those months lost as this disease ravaged my body. Fortunately, my mind is intact and it is sharper than ever.
It’s my belief that we will not only cure ALS, but in doing so help countless others who are dealing with chronic disease.
When I received the ALS diagnosis, the first words out of my mouth were: “Wow, if this is what I’ve got, then I guess it’s meant for me to cure it.”
When the doctors first heard that, they looked at me like I was crazy. I guess it isn’t the reaction they were expecting.
Those doctors gave me two prescription options. Both of the drugs they offered could possibly extend my life by a mere month or two. Of course the prescription costs were hundreds of thousands of dollars and the list of negative side effects was long. The best medical science can offer is a chance that - maybe - I will stay off a ventilator for a few extra days as I lay dying?
And so I said, no. I chose the third option: reaching out to my network of friends and colleagues around the world to see what else might be out there. What other curative methods can be explored? And so that journey has begun.
